Socially Desirable Results

Brought to you by World Renowned Enneagram Thought Leaders

Pioneered by Fergus Sullivan, the Compass was created twenty years ago and was originally formed to assess senior executives for selection and development purposes. This C-suite origin demanded a bed rock of psychometric rigour that the compass has benefitted from ever since. Carried along by the positive cycle of success our responses have snowballed, and our data pool has swelled to provide the facts on which our analysis is built.

Noticing that the Enneagram typing process was shifting from conversation-based methods to online platforms. Beatrice and Uranio became concerned that many of the new Enneagram tests were being created by professionals without a strong theoretical foundation. When they came across the Compass Test they realised that, with their involvement, it could not only become a reliable resource for the Chestnut Paes Academy but met their strong intention to preserve the integrity of the Enneagram system itself.

Compass Enneagram Questionnaire® FAQ’s

Have questions about the Enneagram Compass? You’re in the right place! Here are some common queries we receive. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to contact us!

What is the Enneagram, and how does it work?

The Enneagram is a powerful personality framework that identifies nine distinct personality types. Each type offers unique insights into your motivations, behaviors,
and interactions with others. By understanding your type, you can enhance your
self-awareness and improve your relationships.

The Enneagram can benefit your team by improving self-awareness, communication, and empathy. It helps individuals understand their core motivations and stress patterns, which fosters better collaboration and conflict resolution. By recognizing diverse working styles and perspectives, teams can build trust, reduce misunderstandings, and create a more supportive, effective work environment rooted in mutual understanding.

This test takes about 25 minutes on average to complete. It’s adaptive, meaning the questions you see change based on your answers. Because the algorithm takes longer to reach a result for some people than others, the number of questions each person answers can vary. Everyone follows a slightly different path through the test.

Use the “Test for Clients use” button and add then add the number of Access Codes you need to the Cart. After your first purchase, you’ll receive an email invitation to access the Compass Admin Console. This is where you can assign access codes to your team members, track their progress, and view all their test reports—including the Coaching Report—in one place. You also have the option to send the Access Codes directly from your own email if preferred. Additionally, the console allows you to create a one-page Team Map for group insights

Yes, the test includes a detailed Subtype analysis. The questions were developed with input from two of the world’s leading experts on Subtypes. One of them, Beatrice Chestnut, is the author of The Complete Enneagram, a widely respected book that helped reestablish the importance of Subtypes in Enneagram work. Every report includes a clear identification of the test taker’s Subtype, along with in-depth descriptions.

Yes. Our reports are specifically designed to be accessible for those who are new to the Enneagram. We provide a clear, detailed analysis while avoiding technical jargon or Enneagram-specific terms that might be confusing or differ from everyday language. You don’t need any prior knowledge to understand and benefit from your results.

No. While we recommend the test is taken in one sitting, everyone who takes the test is sent a link to the email address they offer when they sign into the test. This link will take them back to the page where they left off.

Yes. The full 24-page report is fully customizable—you can choose which pages to include on a page-by-page basis when sending it to team members. A shorter version can be shared initially, while the full report remains available to each team member if they wish to explore their results in more depth later.

Any single purchase that is over fifty codes can qualify for a bulk discount- please send us an email and we will contact you to discuss how many codes you need.

If you’re purchasing the test on behalf of a client, you have the option to have the report sent directly to you instead of the test taker. This allows you to control when and how the results are shared, so you can provide feedback at the most appropriate time—such as during a coaching or feedback session.

Yes. Any access code that hasn’t been used can be reallocated within your Admin Console. If a client has started but not completed the test, just contact us—we’ll cancel the incomplete test and issue a replacement code.

As an EU-based company, we fully comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which sets strict rules for how personal and sensitive data—such as names and questionnaire responses—can be collected, stored, and transferred. Under GDPR, transferring such data to countries outside the EU (like South Africa) is not permitted unless those countries provide adequate levels of data protection.

To ensure full compliance, all our data is securely stored on a dedicated server located in Frankfurt, Germany. This facility offers 52,200 square meters of IT space and is SSAE-16 SOC II certified, meaning it meets high international standards for security and data management.

We’ve taken additional steps to protect your data: All mailboxes are SSL-encrypted. Our website is protected by HTTPS encryption. And our Privacy Policy is fully aligned with GDPR standards, including clear provisions for data access, consent, and erasure rights.

In short, if you are based in the EU your data never leaves the EU and is managed with the highest standards of security, privacy, and compliance.

Ipsative (forced-choice) Method

If you’ve found that the Compass Questionnaire® feels unusually robust and insightful, it’s because it employs the ipsative (forced-choice) method—considered the gold standard in psychometric testing. It is one of only two professional Enneagram assessments that uses this approach, where respondents compare two statements and select the one that feels more true to them. This method is particularly well-suited to assessing motivation, which research shows is largely unconscious (Custers, 2010; Aarts, 2012).

Asking someone to rate how much a motivational statement applies to them assumes conscious awareness of their inner drivers, which often leads to unreliable data. In contrast, comparing one statement with another allows individuals to weigh one motivation against another—providing a more accurate picture of which drive is primary (Rokeach, 1973; Van Eijnatten, 2015; Brown, 2017; Olea, 2019).

While forced-choice testing takes longer to complete and analyze, it yields significantly higher-quality data. This trade-off results in deeper, more reliable insights—making the Compass Questionnaire® a structurally superior tool for understanding motivational patterns.

Socially Desirable Results

Fake-Free Results: Why Value-Neutral Questions Matter

One of the greatest challenges in psychological testing—especially in professional settings—is the tendency for people to present an idealized version of themselves. This is known as giving socially desirable responses, and it often undermines the reliability of test results. Traditional questionnaires that ask how much a trait applies leave room for this bias, as test-takers often select answers they think will be seen more favorably.

The Compass Questionnaire® avoids this pitfall by using value-neutral paired statements. Instead of rating agreement with a single statement, respondents must choose between two equally desirable options—forcing a meaningful choice between internal motivations. This ipsative, forced-choice format is far more difficult to fake, because both choices “look good” and neither appears more socially acceptable than the other (Paulhus, 2002; Wetzel, 2020).

This is especially important in corporate environments, where individuals may feel added pressure to “look good for the boss.” In such cases, the drive to craft an ideal self can be strong (Olea, 2019). The value-balanced format neutralizes this pressure, allowing authentic motivational patterns to emerge—even in high-stakes settings like executive assessments, where the Compass Questionnaire® was originally developed.

While constructing a questionnaire with value-neutral, paired items is more complex, the accuracy and honesty of the results more than justify the effort.
